2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Year of the Croaking Craze.
My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. But, their popularity has noticeably surged in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the past five years of hoppy gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming looks especially powerful.
Designing for a Sticky Tongue
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
