British Extends Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory List with 11 Nations
The UK Foreign Office has added 11 new nations to its official warning register concerning the dangers of industrial alcohol toxicity from contaminated alcoholic drinks.
This updated warning features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a global increase in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol contamination.
Just last month, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, after multiple notable cases like the tragic demise of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
Exactly what is Methanol and How is it Utilized?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful chemical typically used in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint thinner. It is not meant for human consumption.
Although it is naturally produced during the creation of spirits, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.
However in certain nations, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and because it is tasteless and scentless, it is impossible to notice.
Authorities' Advice for Tourists
Authorities official a senior official emphasized that all travellers should recognize the indicators of industrial alcohol poisoning.
"If you're having drinks abroad, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"Should anything seems unusual, such as a hangover that's way worse than normal or vision problems – seek medical attention immediately."
The full roster of destinations identified as posing a risk of methanol toxicity currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
